Raising the Ground, Climbing the Trees

CHAPTER IN PRESS

November 2026

My chapter on East River Park is now in press with Edward Elgar, in Terrestrial Politics in the Age of Climate Change: Mess of a Planet, edited by Andrea Mubi Brighenti, Mattias Kärrholm and Alexis Gonin. To protect the Lower East Side from coastal storms, the East Side Coastal Resiliency project removes nearly one thousand mature trees and rebuilds the park eight feet higher. Drawing on interviews with activists and on the City’s own drawings, the chapter shows how construction maps cleared the park in representation before excavators cleared it on the ground. It argues that the project produces a territorial irreversibility, closing futures that the existing ground could still have held.
