TOPOGRAPHIES OF DIFFERENCE

IN THE PERIPHERIES OF SÃO PAULO

Lecture

In the lecture, I analyze the production of ethnic-racial difference alongside shifting frontiers of urbanization in the Tremembé district (northeastern periphery of São Paulo). As material frontiers grow, so do imagined ones: residents construct stereotypical urban identities around people’s placement in the favela, along the river, “in the bushes,” and on the hill.
