In the talk, I analyze the production of ethnic-racial differences alongside shifting frontiers of urbanization in the northern periphery of São Paulo. As material frontiers grow, so do imagined ones: residents construct stereotypical identities around people’s placement in the favelas, along the rivers, “in the bushes,” and on the hills.
