The course provides an overview of the history of the built environment from 1500 AD to the present. The class is divided into three parts. In the first, we survey global architecture in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. We then move to our primary focus, Europe and the United States, looking at the variety of architectural ideas that emerged from 1700-1900. The final section charts the rise and fall of architectural modernism in Europe, the U.S., and Asia.

My teaching emphasizes the learner’s role in constructing meaning from new and previous knowledge. To spur students’ engagement from different backgrounds, I guide them in acknowledging their peers’ diverse ways of knowing and to construct understanding together through small group discussions and role-playing.

Emphasizing neglected aspects of urban and architectural history is critical to examine the reproduction of inequality in space. To explore these alternative spatial histories, I use multi-perspective accounts of everyday life.
